Join us at UC San Diego for Reboot the Earth

The United Nations (UN), UC San Diego Library’s Open Source Program Office (OSPO), the Societal Computing and Innovation Lab at the San Diego Supercomputer Center and the Office of Innovation and Commercialization are collaborating to bring the “Reboot the Earth” hackathon to Southern California for the first time.

Reboot the Earth is a social coding event bringing together aspiring developers to create open source software solutions that address the climate crisis, including wildfire response. It’s a chance to collaborate with peers, use open data, and apply your coding skills to real-world climate challenges!

Reboot the Earth at UC San Diego is taking place May 8-9, 2026, in the San Diego Supercomputer Center Auditorium.

At Reboot the Earth UCSD, taking place May 8-9, 2026, the organizing partners will collaborate with students, climate experts, and the broader open-source community.

Over the course of two days, participants will be presented with a series of tech challenges, for which they will use open data, AI, and tech concepts to build a digital public good. Each solution should aim to solve a local climate crisis unique to their community needs, and be available to others – improving or building upon open source programs that can be used by anyone globally to address the climate crisis.

Participants will benefit from dedicated support from mentors and partners, aimed at refining and enhancing their prototypes. The event will end with an award ceremony on the final day, recognizing and celebrating the achievements of the participants.
